Passenger group reports 125,405 road deaths since 2014 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity reports 125,405 road deaths from 2014 through June 2026, based on media monitoring. The passenger group links the toll to weak transport management and road-dependent planning, and calls for safer vehicles, trained drivers, an organised bus network and stronger rail and water transport.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity says 125,405 people were killed and 176,249 injured in 72,736 road crashes between 2014 and 30 June 2026. The passenger welfare organisation released the figures on 21 October ahead of National Road Safety Day.

The totals come from its monitoring of media reports. They should be understood as the organisation’s compilation, rather than a complete official count of every crash or casualty. The group says the actual toll may be higher, although its statement does not establish that larger figure.

Secretary General Mozammel Haque Chowdhury blamed transport mismanagement and planning that increased reliance on roads without developing an integrated public transport network. The organisation also pointed to unfit vehicles, unlicensed or inadequately trained drivers, excessive speed and flaws in road construction.

Its recommendations include stronger driver training and vehicle fitness checks, safety audits, adequate rest for drivers, safer pedestrian facilities and separation of traffic where appropriate. It also wants an organised bus network and greater use of railways and waterways.

The group additionally recommends scrapping vehicles past their service life, strengthening the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and involving transport specialists in planning and oversight. It proposes a modern traffic training academy to support those changes.
