Imranur Rahman and Shirin Akter won the men’s and women’s 100-metre titles at the National Summer Athletics competition in Dhaka on 23 October, as inconsistent timing displays drew questions about the results system.

Both champions represent the Bangladesh Navy. The published results placed Mohammad Ismail second and Tarek Rahman third in the men’s event. Sharifa Khatun and Sumaiya Dewan took the other women’s podium places.

Imranur’s published winning time was 10.53 seconds and Shirin’s was 12.08 seconds. However, reporters at the National Stadium described discrepancies between the photo-finish equipment and digital display, including changes to the men’s displayed result within minutes. The times should be read with that qualification.

Shirin said the win encouraged her preparations for the South Asian competition and credited her coaches, teammates and supporting institutions. Imranur stressed the importance of better accommodation, nutrition and travel support for athletes.

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir opened the competition and presented medals. The first day combined successful title defences with unresolved questions over how times were recorded and displayed; the reporting had not established an explanation for the technical discrepancies.
