Consultants in England announce strikes for 25 and 26 November

The BMA has announced two days of consultant strikes in England over pay and working conditions. Emergency cover is planned, with staffing comparable to Christmas Day. The union says formal negotiations could avert the walkout; the government has criticised the decision.

Hospital consultants in England plan to strike on 25 and 26 November, the British Medical Association announced on Monday.

The union said the dispute concerns pay, workload, wellbeing and the ability of the NHS to retain senior doctors. It argued that the government had not made a meaningful commitment to resolving those issues.

Emergency services would retain cover comparable to Christmas Day staffing. The announcement does not specify the effect on every hospital or individual appointment.

The BMA said the action could be avoided if Health Secretary Yvette Cooper committed to formal negotiations on pay and conditions. Cooper criticised the decision and said discussions had been constructive.

The announcement follows the government’s recommendation of a 2.4% doctors’ pay increase for 2027–28 in evidence to the pay review body. That recommendation is not a final pay award.

With the proposed walkout still a month away, negotiations and hospital planning will determine whether it proceeds and how routine services are affected.
