Campaign launched for clearer warning labels on packaged foods
Health organisations have launched a campaign for prominent warnings on packaged foods high in sugar, salt or saturated fat. The food safety authority says it is working on the necessary regulations. Sunday’s launch builds public awareness and support for the proposal; it does not introduce an immediate labelling requirement.

A public-awareness campaign supporting front-of-package warning labels was launched in Dhaka on 25 October, aiming to make the contents of packaged food and drinks easier to understand.
The campaign focuses on products containing high levels of sugar, salt or saturated fat. Organisers say clear warnings would help consumers recognise those ingredients without having to interpret detailed nutrition panels.
The launch at the National Press Club brought together organisations including Pragya, the National Heart Foundation, Dhaka Ahsania Mission and the Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust.
Bangladesh Food Safety Authority chairman Md Shafiqul Islam said the authority was working on regulations for the warning labels.
The campaign will use broadcast, print and digital media. It supports the development of a regulatory system; the launch is not an announcement that a new mandatory labelling rule has already taken effect.
