An electrical fire disrupted power and medical services at Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Thursday, 22 October, forcing patients and their relatives to leave wards in panic. Hospital officials said the blaze began at a switchboard beside the administrative section at around 6am.

A nurse alerted the fire service, which brought the flames under control. The switchboard’s circuit breaker and wiring were damaged, interrupting electricity supply for about six hours. Dhaka Tribune reported that patients and relatives were injured while rushing downstairs to evacuate the building.

Hospital officials told UNB that power returned to wards around noon after repairs, allowing dialysis, intensive care and other services to resume. Dhaka Post also reported the resumption of critical services, while saying the administrative building still had no electricity when its afternoon report was filed.

However, Jugantor’s evening report said uninterrupted supply had not returned to every ward. Deputy director Abdul Mokaddem told the newspaper that one electrical phase had burned out and repairs were continuing.
