Intern doctors at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital stopped work from 8am on 21 October, demanding better security and adequate medicines and equipment. The action disrupted services and increased the workload of doctors who remained on duty.

The Intern Doctors Society said crowded wards, unrestricted entry by patients’ relatives and shortages of essential supplies were exposing interns to threats and confrontation.

Their five demands include sufficient medicines and equipment, protection for interns, a limit of two attendants per patient, active deployment of Ansar personnel and reopening the casualty department. At a news conference, society president Dr SM Tupu said the action would continue until the demands were met.

Hospital spokesperson Dr Sheikh Shamim Ahmed said three demands had already been addressed and the remaining issues had been referred to the ministry. He said officials planned to reopen the casualty department on 1 November and had sought permission to recruit 100 additional Ansar members.

According to the spokesperson, the hospital’s approved 1,200-bed capacity was serving 3,000–4,000 patients daily. Senior and mid-level doctors were maintaining services during the stoppage. The administration said interns should return by Friday, 23 October, and warned that legal action could follow if they remained absent on Saturday, 24 October.
