Gazipur BRT corridor to become a six-lane general road
The government plans to turn the stalled Gazipur–Airport BRT corridor into a six-lane road after roughly Tk2,810 crore in spending. Dedicated stations and dividers would be removed. Authorities must resolve contractual issues and consult lenders before closure, while planners warn that the decision would weaken public transport.

The government plans to replace the stalled Gazipur–Airport Bus Rapid Transit scheme with a six-lane road for general traffic, ending the prospect of dedicated buses on the corridor after roughly Tk2,810 crore in spending.
Details published on 21 October show that the cabinet approved the approach on 18 October. A ministry letter issued the following day called for BRT stations and lane dividers to be removed, creating three lanes in each direction. Officials will also examine widening two overpasses.
Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit PLC is to be dissolved, with its responsibilities transferred to the Roads and Highways Department. Authorities must submit an initial progress report within 15 days. Formal closure requires consultation with development partners and resolution of legal and contractual issues.
The 20.5-kilometre project was approved in 2012. Although most infrastructure work was completed, the intended bus service never started after procurement attempts failed.
A Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology review supported conversion, citing design and capacity problems. The Bangladesh Institute of Planners and other professional groups oppose abandoning the bus system, arguing that mixed traffic would undermine public transport.
