Thirty-five Bangladeshi nationals were returned from three European countries on 23 October, arriving in Dhaka on a special charter flight. Nineteen came from Italy, ten from Greece and six from Cyprus.

Immigration police and airport sources said the aircraft reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at about 8.15am. The Italian embassy said the European Union’s border agency, Frontex, arranged the return flight.

BRAC’s migration programme provided emergency assistance, counselling and money for travel home, working with airport security and the expatriates’ welfare desk. Representatives of the foreign ministry and the European Union were present.

The returnees received support under Prottasha-2, a programme jointly funded by BRAC and the EU. Officials said further counselling and training would be followed by economic assistance intended to help people rebuild their livelihoods after returning.

Bangladesh agreed operating procedures with European countries in 2017 for the return of citizens without regular immigration status. BRAC associate director Shariful Hasan said support for returning migrants combines immediate help at the airport with later assistance. Friday’s flight brought people from three countries together in one coordinated return operation.
