The cabinet has approved a proposal for Bangladesh to join the Rotterdam Convention, an international agreement governing information and consent in trade involving certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on 18 October. Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani announced it afterwards, with the environment ministry responsible for bringing the proposal.
The convention provides a framework for countries to receive information about listed hazardous substances before making import decisions. It also supports information exchange between importing and exporting countries.
The government said participation would help Bangladesh strengthen chemical management, develop a national information database and obtain scientific, technical and legal information from other members. Officials also pointed to opportunities for training, technical assistance and cooperation on relevant projects.
The convention was adopted in 1998 and entered into force in 2004. Bangladesh’s proposed participation is intended to give its authorities more information for decisions on the handling and international trade of hazardous substances.
