The University Grants Commission plans to connect every public and private university to a digital network within two years and introduce compulsory student internships within five years.

UGC Chairman Professor Mamun Ahmed outlined the proposals at a workshop on the digital transformation of higher education management in Dhaka on 18 October.

The network is intended to support faster internet access, digital classrooms and online university services. Students would be able to obtain information about admission fees and hall places and apply for certificates through digital systems.

The commission also wants institutions to share teaching resources. Students at universities with teacher shortages could join classes delivered by specialists elsewhere, including Bangladeshi academics working abroad.

For internships, the UGC proposes a central platform linking universities with businesses, service organisations and government bodies. It would match institutions’ placement needs with the opportunities employers can offer, with the commission coordinating the process.

The proposals were presented as a programme to improve teaching, administration and graduates’ preparation for employment. The UGC’s role would include coordinating universities and placement providers as those plans are developed.
