The cabinet has approved plans to move the Bangladesh Secretariat from Abdul Gani Road to the former trade fair grounds in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, with the government aiming to begin office work there in 2029.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani announced the decision after a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on 18 October.

The proposed complex would contain 14 twelve-storey buildings, parking for 3,800 vehicles, three basement levels and facilities including a mosque and cafeteria. Underpasses and underground roads are planned to help manage traffic around the site.

Ghani said the government wanted ministries to work together more effectively. Some ministries already operate outside the main Secretariat compound, while older buildings and a shortage of office space have been cited as reasons for relocation.

The cabinet’s decision advances a proposal that had received an earlier agreement in principle. Detailed engineering and service designs still need work.

Ghani said the government would finance the project, but the total cost had not yet been finalised. Preparations are continuing towards the government’s 2029 target.
