A three-day festival commemorating Fakir Lalon Shah began at his shrine in Chheuriya, Kushtia, on Saturday, marking the Baul philosopher and songwriter’s 136th death anniversary.

Followers, musicians and visitors gathered at the akhra in Kumarkhali for songs, discussions and devotional observances. The remembrance programme runs from 17 to 19 October, with the formal opening scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Lalon Academy and the local administration organised the programme with support from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Security arrangements were made around the shrine and festival grounds as visitors arrived from different parts of the country.

Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy also arranged commemorative events in Dhaka and other locations, extending the anniversary observance beyond Kushtia.

Lalon died on 17 October 1890. His songs examine human identity, religious and social divisions, and the dignity of people beyond those divisions. Music and discussion of that philosophy remain at the centre of the annual gathering.
