Garment workers demanding payment of arrears and higher wages clashed with police in Dhaka’s Uttara on Saturday, disrupting the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway near Rajlakshmi.

Workers had been demonstrating during the week over demands including a Tk30,000 minimum wage. They gathered at several locations in and around Uttara before attempting to occupy the highway. Police used batons, sound grenades and water cannon to disperse them; tear gas was also reported.

Uttara police deputy commissioner Md Rezaul Karim said demonstrators threw brickbats when officers tried to clear the road. He reported injuries to police personnel, including an Industrial Police officer with a broken arm. Police vehicles were damaged during the confrontation.

Early accounts differed on the number injured. Some put the overall figure at at least 50, including 19 police personnel; The Daily Star reported a lower initial police count and had not established the number of injured workers. There was no reconciled casualty total in the reports reviewed.

Police said they would examine CCTV footage before bringing cases over the violence. The workers’ demand for a higher wage remained unresolved; no new wage settlement was announced in those reports.
