Security agencies increase patrols at Durga Puja venues

Bangladesh's Coast Guard and Border Guard have increased security measures for Durga Puja. Coast Guard operations cover 615 coastal and riverine temples and mandaps, with special diving teams prepared for idol immersion. From 17 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Bangladesh’s security agencies have stepped up patrols and surveillance at Durga Puja venues as the religious festival begins across the country.

The Coast Guard says its personnel are protecting 615 temples and puja mandaps in coastal and riverine areas. It has prepared special diving and rescue teams to respond to emergencies during idol immersion, when large crowds gather near waterways.

Different official statements and media reports put the number of Coast Guard personnel involved at different levels. The figure is therefore not included here, but the coverage of 615 locations is consistent across the reports reviewed.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has separately increased patrols, intelligence monitoring and coordination with local police and puja committees, with particular attention to remote and border-area venues.

The agencies say their arrangements are designed to prevent violence, respond to rumours and maintain safety throughout the festival. Their security operations cover overlapping places, so combining individual announcements would not establish a reliable nationwide total of protected mandaps.

Durga Puja began on 16 October and is scheduled to conclude with idol immersion on 21 October.
