Two Bangladesh police personnel detained by India’s Border Security Force have returned after a flag meeting at the Cumilla border, Bangladeshi officials said on Friday, 16 October.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan, both of Brahmanpara Police Station, were handed to Border Guard Bangladesh in the afternoon. The BGB subsequently transferred them to Bangladesh Police.
The officers had been detained the previous night near the Ashabari border in Shashidal union. According to the police account, they were conducting an anti-drug operation when a suspected trafficker fled and a pursuit took them across the border.
Police said Rohit was initially detained by local residents in India. Imran was also detained when he tried to bring his colleague back. The two men then came into BSF custody.
Senior police and border-force officials contacted the Indian authorities to arrange their return. The flag meeting brought together representatives of the two border forces and Bangladesh Police.
The account of the pursuit comes from Bangladeshi officials. Their statements establish that the officers have returned; the reports reviewed did not include a separate Indian account of how the crossing occurred.
