Bangladesh has launched a National Plastic Action Partnership to coordinate work on plastic pollution across government, industry, development organisations and civil society.
Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo inaugurated the platform in Dhaka on 13 October. The initiative brings together the environment ministry, the Department of Environment, UNDP Bangladesh and the World Economic Forum’s Global Plastic Action Partnership.
The programme will seek to connect fragmented projects, support waste collection and recycling, and align investment with national priorities. Mintoo said action was needed throughout the plastics system, from production and consumption to collection and reuse.
The minister highlighted the 2026 guidelines on extended producer responsibility, which assign waste-management obligations to manufacturers, importers and brand owners. He said implementation would require dependable data, suitable infrastructure and cooperation between producers, recyclers and public authorities.
UNDP’s resident representative, Stephen Rodriques, linked plastic waste to blocked drains, waterlogging and river pollution, and called for household waste separation.
State Minister Shaikh Md Faridul Islam said the partnership should be judged by practical results, including better conditions for communities and waste workers, rather than by the number of meetings held.
