Government outlines Tk25,000cr safe drinking-water plan
Bangladesh is considering a nationwide Tk25,000 crore programme to improve access to safe drinking water, the local government minister says. Declining river flows and saltwater intrusion are worsening supply problems, particularly in the north and coastal south. The proposal is still at the planning stage, not an approved or completed investment.

The government is planning an integrated programme worth almost Tk25,000 crore to improve access to safe drinking water nationwide, Local Government Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan said on 8 October.
Speaking after a meeting with UNICEF representatives, the minister described declining river flows, upstream water withdrawals and growing salinity as serious obstacles to reliable drinking-water supplies.
He said parts of northern Bangladesh face reduced river flows while saline water is moving further inland from the Bay of Bengal, adding pressure to communities in the south.
The proposed programme would address a basic public-health and infrastructure need, but the announcement did not establish that financing, detailed project design or implementation arrangements had been finalised.
For households and businesses, the key question is whether a future scheme can deliver reliable services and long-term maintenance rather than simply new infrastructure.
