Bangladesh plans to establish two army camps near Rohingya settlements in Cox’s Bazar as part of measures to address abduction, extortion and trafficking, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on 8 October.
Following a coordination meeting on forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, he outlined plans to repair damaged fencing, expand CCTV coverage and install solar-powered lighting and observation facilities.
The proposed army posts are in the Rongikhali and Noakhalipara areas, where officials say security problems have persisted. Investigative powers for additional Armed Police Battalion officers were also discussed.
The measures respond to a difficult security environment inside densely populated refugee settlements, where vulnerable residents and host communities are affected by crime.
The government also reiterated its hope for eventual Rohingya repatriation under international auspices. Security measures inside Bangladesh do not resolve the underlying conditions in Myanmar that have prevented safe returns.
