Prime minister calls for 1,000 playgrounds within two months

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed officials to establish playgrounds in every union, with at least 1,000 to be created or made available within two months. Dhaka's city corporations were also asked to expand access to playing space. These are government instructions, and delivery has not yet been demonstrated.

From 9 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed government agencies to establish playgrounds in every union and to make at least 1,000 playgrounds available across Bangladesh within two months.

The directions were issued during a meeting at the Secretariat on 8 October about local sports facilities and access to open space for children and young people.

Dhaka North and South city corporations were also asked to provide at least one playground for every two or three wards. Officials discussed making 40 playgrounds in the north and 90 in the south suitable for regular sports by December.

The programme reflects growing concern that rapid urban development has reduced opportunities for recreation and physical activity.

The proposed timetable is short. Implementation will depend on identifying usable land, maintenance arrangements and keeping facilities accessible rather than allowing them to be repurposed or encroached upon.
