A Dhaka court has sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam to four years in prison for acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income.

Divisional Special Judge BM Tariqul Kabir delivered the verdict on 15 October. The court also imposed a Tk20,000 fine, with a further six months in prison if unpaid, and ordered Tk31.81 lakh confiscated.

Siam is the son of Syed Abed Ali Jibon, a former driver associated with the Public Service Commission. The conviction concerns illicit wealth.

After the verdict, defence lawyer Rafiqul Islam sought bail pending appeal. The court rejected the request and Siam was returned to prison. He had pleaded innocent during his defence hearing on 24 September.

The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on 5 January 2025 and submitted its charge sheet that December. The trial began in June 2026, and the court heard evidence from 11 witnesses before delivering its judgment.
