CUET vice-chancellor leaves campus after nearly 30 hours confined

CUET’s vice-chancellor left the campus under police escort after students confined him for nearly 30 hours while demanding his resignation. Protesters said he should not return. His departure ends the immediate confinement, while the dispute over university leadership remains unresolved.

From 14 October 2026 — Daily Brief

The vice-chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology left the campus on 13 October after demonstrating students confined him inside the administrative building for nearly 30 hours.

Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam was brought out at around 6pm and taken away in an ambulance under police escort. Chattogram’s deputy commissioner and superintendent of police attended, alongside university officials.

Students had locked the building on 12 October while demanding the vice-chancellor’s resignation. As he departed, protesters announced that they were allowing him to leave on the condition that he would never return.

There was no confirmation that he had accepted that condition. Leaving the campus does not itself establish that he has resigned or that his appointment has been withdrawn.

The confrontation follows protests over his appointment on 21 September and demands to reinstate the previous vice-chancellor. The dispute has disrupted academic and administrative activity.

Earlier on 13 October, the vice-chancellor told journalists that he was experiencing chest pain and a headache and needed medical attention. His removal from the building addresses the immediate confinement, while a settlement of the leadership dispute remains outstanding.
