From 9 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman chaired a high-level meeting on 8 October to review Dhaka’s public transport system, road safety and persistent management problems.

The discussion took place at the Cabinet Division in the Secretariat. Senior officials from the road transport and local government ministries, the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority and Dhaka Metropolitan Police attended.

The meeting brought together agencies responsible for different parts of the city’s transport network, from road administration and traffic enforcement to coordination of bus services. Such overlap has long complicated attempts to improve passenger safety and reliability.

Dhaka’s transport problems affect workers, students and businesses through unpredictable journey times, congestion and unsafe conditions. Better coordination can be important, but the effectiveness of any reform depends on decisions that are implemented and enforced.

The initial official account described the subjects discussed but did not announce a completed reform package, new operating rules or an implementation timetable. It would therefore be premature to claim that the meeting itself has resolved the city’s transport difficulties.

The next development to watch is whether the government issues specific measures, assigns responsibilities and sets deadlines for transport agencies to act.
