Bangladesh has sought information from Saudi Arabia’s ambassador after the execution in Makkah of two people identified in Saudi reports as Bangladeshi citizens.

Bilateral Affairs Secretary M Nazrul Islam met Ambassador Abdullah Zafer H bin Abiyah at the state guesthouse Padma on 18 October. Foreign Minister Shama Obaed Islam said the government had asked the envoy for an explanation.

Officials handed the ambassador a copy of a diplomatic note already sent electronically. Dhaka wants details of the people executed, the cases against them and the judicial proceedings. Bangladeshi officials said they had not received advance notification of the proceedings and executions.

The meeting followed reports that Saudi authorities carried out the sentences on 14 October. Bangladesh’s mission had sought further information after learning of the executions through Saudi reporting.

A foreign ministry official described the engagement as a meeting, cautioning against characterising it as a formal summons. The accounts also show that Dhaka was seeking documentary confirmation of the individuals’ identities and citizenship.

Dhaka’s request covers both the judicial process and the information supplied to Bangladesh’s representatives before the executions.
