Bangladesh’s 22-day nationwide ban on catching hilsa begins on 8 October and runs through 29 October, under a decision announced by the fisheries ministry in September.

Transporting, storing, marketing, buying, selling and exchanging hilsa will also be prohibited during the period. The restriction is intended to protect the fish during its peak breeding season.

Authorities have announced food assistance for fishers who stop fishing. Reporting from Chandpur on 2 October describes preparations for stronger river surveillance and coordinated enforcement.

Source note: The national dates were announced in September. This is an advance reminder, not a new ban announced today. The first two reports share a ministry announcement; the third covers local preparations in Chandpur.
