Health experts press for mandatory warnings on packaged food

Public-health specialists have called for mandatory warnings on the front of packaged foods containing high levels of salt, sugar or saturated fat.
They made the demand at a 15 October webinar organised by PROGGA with support from the Global Health Advocacy Incubator ahead of World Food Day.
Speakers argued that prominent warnings would help shoppers understand a product’s nutritional risks more easily than complex information printed on the back of a packet.
Bangladesh Food Safety Authority member Professor Mohammad Shoeb said draft packaged-food labelling regulations were with the food ministry. He said responses to World Trade Organization questions had been sent through the commerce ministry and discussions with business organisations were continuing.
The proposal remains under consideration. Mandatory front-of-pack warnings have not yet been introduced under the draft regulations.
