Government introduces automated system for doctors' transfers

Bangladesh's health ministry has launched an automated system for doctors' transfers and postings, aiming to use merit, qualifications and workplace preferences rather than personal influence. Reports differ over the number of doctors in the first batch, so the initial total remains unconfirmed in this account.

From 17 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Bangladesh’s health ministry has introduced a computer-based system for transfers and postings of doctors, with the aim of making decisions more transparent and reducing personal or political influence.

Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain inaugurated the initiative at the Secretariat on 15 October. He said the system would take account of doctors’ merit, qualifications, assessment scores and preferred workplaces when assigning posts.

The authorities have begun an initial round of transfers. News reports differ over whether 87 or 95 doctors are covered by the first stage, so the exact number is not treated as established here.

The government plans to extend automated transfers and postings to more positions under the Health Services Division after assessing the initial implementation.

The new process is intended to replace some of the discretionary practices that have attracted complaints about lobbying and favouritism. However, launching automated software does not by itself establish that each decision is impartial or that the system has been fully audited.

Further evaluation will be needed to establish whether doctors’ preferences and staffing needs are being balanced fairly.
