Six more deaths reported with measles and measles-like illness

DGHS data reported six additional deaths involving measles or measles-like symptoms, taking the combined confirmed and suspected toll to 1,140. Another 1,280 suspected cases were recorded in 24 hours.

From 8 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Six more patients died with measles or measles-like symptoms in the 24 hours to 8:00am on 7 October, taking the combined confirmed and suspected death toll to 1,140, according to Directorate General of Health Services data reported by multiple outlets.

Two of the latest deaths were classified as confirmed measles deaths and four as suspected. That brought the cumulative figures to 104 confirmed deaths and 1,036 suspected deaths.

Health authorities also recorded 1,280 new suspected cases during the period, taking the cumulative suspected-case total above 200,000. Another 110 laboratory-confirmed infections were reported, bringing confirmed cases to 22,020.

Reporting on the daily update was not fully consistent: one outlet described only the four additional suspected deaths, while other reports included the two confirmed deaths as well. The combined total of 1,140 is consistent across the reporting reviewed.

The scale of the outbreak underlines the importance of vaccination coverage, rapid diagnosis and surveillance. Suspected-case totals are not the same as laboratory-confirmed infections, so the two figures should not be combined as though they represent identical diagnostic categories.
