Microsoft introduced a voluntary exit offer on Monday for eligible employees in participating teams across the UK, United States, Canada and India.

The programme provides financial support and career-planning resources for staff who choose to leave. Microsoft said eligibility extends to employees at level 70 and below in the organisations taking part.

Sky News reported that about 60,000 employees could receive the offer. That number must not be interpreted as 60,000 confirmed job losses: participation is voluntary and the eventual number of departures is unknown.

The company said some teams would participate while others would not, depending on business needs and customer commitments. It has not published a separate figure for UK departures.

The offer is time-limited, with individual details being sent directly to eligible staff. Microsoft described it as another way to adjust its workforce as organisational requirements change.

The next indication of its scale will come from how many eligible employees accept and which businesses are affected.
