Revolut enters the UK personal-loan market

Revolut has begun offering personal loans to selected UK customers, adding lending to its challenge to established banks. Loans range from £2,000 to £25,000, with access expanding gradually. The launch does not mean every customer can borrow or receive the same rate.

Revolut launched personal loans in Britain on Monday, expanding its UK business beyond the services that first attracted customers to its app.

The company is offering loans of between £2,000 and £25,000, initially to selected customers. Availability will expand gradually rather than opening immediately to its entire UK customer base.

The move puts Revolut into more direct competition with established banks and other consumer lenders. Its UK chief executive, Francesca Carlesi, described lending as part of the company’s broader expansion.

Eligibility and pricing depend on the customer and the lending assessment. The advertised range does not mean that every applicant will receive the largest loan or the lowest available interest rate.

Revolut also has plans for a UK credit-card product, but that is separate from Monday’s personal-loan launch. The immediate development is the addition of unsecured borrowing to its UK offering, with the scale of uptake still to be established.
