German business confidence improves, but current conditions weaken

Germany’s Ifo business climate index rose to 90.2 in October from 89.9 in September. Expectations improved while assessments of current conditions slipped. The survey offers a modestly brighter outlook for Europe’s largest economy, without showing that output has already recovered.

German business confidence edged higher in October, according to the Ifo institute’s monthly survey published on Monday.

The headline business climate index rose to 90.2 from 89.9 in September. Firms were more optimistic about the months ahead, even as their assessment of present conditions deteriorated.

The expectations measure reached 91.6, while the current-situation measure fell to 88.8 from 89.5. Manufacturing sentiment improved, but the service-sector picture weakened.

The contrast suggests that hopes for better trading are running ahead of companies’ experience of current activity. It is therefore too early to treat the survey as evidence of a broad recovery.

Ifo’s findings draw on responses from roughly 9,000 businesses. They measure sentiment rather than gross domestic product or a direct count of goods and services produced.

For Britain, the survey is a useful indicator of conditions in a major European market, although it does not by itself establish the outlook for UK trade.
