Burnham reopens debate over Britain’s long-term relationship with the EU

Prime Minister Andy Burnham reopened the debate over Britain’s relationship with the European Union on Monday, saying he would personally like to see the country return to the bloc during his lifetime.
His remarks did not announce a decision to rejoin. Downing Street said he wanted a public discussion about the long-term relationship and was not proposing a return to freedom of movement.
The distinction matters because Labour’s existing commitments rule out rejoining the single market and customs union or restoring freedom of movement. Burnham has said a different course would require a mandate.
The government’s immediate focus is a summit with EU leaders on 20 November and practical changes to the relationship. The form of any wider public consultation remains unclear.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage challenged Burnham’s authority to pursue closer ties and argued that a new electoral mandate would be needed. The exchanges leave Europe prominent in political debate ahead of the Budget.
