National Bank began repaying depositors on 15 October after receiving Tk7,000 crore in liquidity support from Sonali Bank, moving from a financing announcement to actual withdrawals at branches.
Customers with savings accounts were able to withdraw money on the first day. However, reports from branches showed less certainty over access to some older corporate balances. The resumption should therefore not be treated as proof that every depositor can immediately withdraw any amount.
The support carries a Bangladesh Bank guarantee and is intended to help meet withdrawal demands. The three-month facility has an interest rate of 10 per cent.
Conditions restrict how National Bank may use the money. It is not available for making new loans or repaying directors, and the bank must report on its use of the support each week.
The new development is the start of repayments, following the earlier agreement on emergency funding. The position of individual depositors depends on the account and repayment arrangements being applied by the bank.
