The National Citizen Party announced a protest at Shahbag on 30 October, demanding the resignation of the home and energy ministers and changes to the government’s approach to constitutional reform and civil liberties.

Party convener Nahid Islam outlined the programme on 23 October while launching a week of leafleting and public outreach in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar. The rally is scheduled for 3pm outside the National Museum, organised by the party’s Dhaka north and south units.

Nahid said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku should take responsibility for what he described as failures in public security and energy policy. He also criticised rising living costs and alleged partisan control of state institutions.

The party wants a constitutional reform council based on the referendum verdict, withdrawal of proposed cyber-law changes and repeal of laws it describes as authoritarian. It also called for justice over the July uprising killings.

NCP leaders distributed leaflets to small traders after their speeches. Member secretary Akhter Hossen urged people to attend the Shahbag programme. Friday’s outreach launches the party’s mobilisation for the announced demonstration.
