Seven Islamic political parties agreed on 22 October to work under a common banner, Samamana Islami Dalsamuha, while retaining their own organisations and current political alliances.

The decision followed a meeting at Makhzanul Ulum Madrasa in Dhaka’s Khilgaon, chaired by Hefazat-e-Islam secretary general Sajidur Rahman. Representatives said Hefazat’s leaders had facilitated the talks.

The participating organisations are Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Khelafat Majlis, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, Islami Oikya Jote’s Razi faction, Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party and Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan.

A 21-member liaison committee, with three representatives from each party, is coordinating the initiative. Leaders described plans for joint activities on issues they share, while leaving detailed arrangements for further discussion.

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and Nezame Islam representatives said participation did not mean immediately leaving the existing 11-party alliance. Other leaders likewise said their parties would keep their present political relationships.

Hefazat leader Muhyiddin Rabbani described the organisation’s role as that of an adviser to the unity effort. Earlier meetings in July and September prepared the discussions; the 22 October meeting settled the common banner. Further talks are expected in December.
