The Supreme Court’s chamber judge has temporarily halted High Court directions to recover Tk666 crore in tax arrears from Grameen Kalyan, with its challenge due before the regular Appellate Division on 13 December.

Justice Md Rezaul Haque issued the order on Sunday, 18 October, following two petitions seeking permission to appeal. Lawyers for both Grameen Kalyan and the state said the stay concerned the directions for recovering the arrears and notifying the organisation about payment.

The tax dispute remains before the courts; the stay provides interim relief while the petitions are considered.

The contested tax assessments cover five financial years, from 2012–13 to 2016–17. Grameen Kalyan, an organisation founded by Muhammad Yunus, had challenged the assessments through two writ petitions.

The High Court dismissed those petitions on 10 September and issued directions concerning payment of the arrears.
