From 18 October 2026 — Daily Brief

A parliamentary committee has decided to investigate the implementation of the Karnaphuli Tunnel project and the reasons for its financial losses.

The standing committee on the Planning Ministry took the decision at its second meeting on Saturday. Members discussed the feasibility study, the way the project was implemented and its financial performance, and agreed to examine the issues in more detail at their next meeting.

The committee said the relevant authorities would be expected to assist the investigation. No findings from that inquiry were announced at Saturday’s meeting.

The discussion formed part of a wider review of development-project management. The Planning Ministry told members that the implementation periods of 256 projects had been extended in the 2025–26 financial year.

It identified land-acquisition problems, import dependence, delays in appointing project directors, inadequate feasibility studies, delayed funding and disagreements between ministries among the causes.

The committee recommended measures to reduce such delays. For the tunnel, the immediate next step is scrutiny of the project records and losses, rather than a completed judgment on who was responsible.
