From 17 October 2026 — Daily Brief

The government has begun seeking nominations from employers and workers for a new wage board to review pay in Bangladesh’s garment industry. Officials said on 16 October that the board could be formed within days.

The move follows several days of demonstrations by workers in Uttara who have demanded a minimum basic monthly salary of Tk30,000 and raised concerns about rising living costs and outstanding pay. Factory owners have also reported disruptions to production.

The board will consider a revised wage structure once formed. The Tk30,000 figure is a demand from protesting workers, not a wage already approved by the government.
