Parliamentary panel presses three ports over audits and security

A parliamentary committee has reviewed financial management at Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports. Members urged action on unresolved audits, cargo security and goods awaiting auction. They recommended determining responsibility where investigations establish irregularities or losses, rather than announcing findings against named officials.

From 13 October 2026 — Daily Brief

A parliamentary committee has called for stronger financial oversight and operational controls at Chattogram, Mongla and Payra ports after reviewing their accounts and audit reports on 12 October.

The Public Undertaking committee discussed unresolved audit objections, project expenditure and protection of public money. At Chattogram, members examined security concerns following a newspaper report about missing cargo containers.

They urged better coordination with Customs and disposal of containers and vehicles awaiting auction. The committee also discussed recovering matured fixed deposits held by Chattogram Port Authority in banks.

Reviews of Mongla and Payra covered dredging, project implementation and whether expenditure was achieving the intended results. Members recommended determining responsibility and taking action under the relevant rules if irregularities or financial losses were established.

The committee’s recommendations concern oversight and further action. They do not themselves constitute findings that particular officials committed wrongdoing or that disputed expenditure has been conclusively accounted for.
