Bangladesh seeks Canadian cooperation on energy and climate finance

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought Canadian support for energy, agriculture and climate finance. Talks also covered technical education, food security and Rohingya repatriation. The meeting identified priorities for cooperation rather than announcing a new bilateral financing package or signed projects.

From 13 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Bangladesh has sought stronger Canadian cooperation in energy, agriculture and climate finance during talks between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and a visiting delegation on 12 October.

The delegation was led by Randeep Sarai, Canada’s secretary of state for international development. The meeting at the Secretariat also considered technical education, food security and poverty reduction, according to the prime minister’s press office.

Rahman said safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation to Myanmar remained the sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis. The discussions also covered bilateral economic ties and potential areas for a wider partnership.

Canada expressed interest in cooperation on oil and liquefied natural gas supplies. Sarai also described a global climate-finance programme from which Bangladesh could potentially benefit.

The requests and expressions of interest should not be treated as approval of particular projects. No new bilateral financing amount, implementation deadline or signed investment agreement was established in the account of the meeting.
