Bangladesh has approved a large solar power project at Rampal in Bagerhat, with a new requirement to incorporate eight hours of battery storage into the scheme.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council approved the 442-megawatt-peak plant on 7 October as part of a package of 13 development projects worth Tk16,207.55 crore. The Bangladesh Power Development Board is responsible for implementing the solar scheme.
The solar installation is planned on land already acquired around the Rampal power complex. The proposal initially focused on supplying electricity directly to the national grid, but the government directed planners to integrate storage so power generated in daylight can also be available later.
Planning officials said the detailed development proposal would need to be revised to reflect the eight-hour storage requirement. That means the final design, costs and procurement arrangements may differ from the original project figures.
The scheme would represent a significant addition to Bangladesh’s renewable power capacity, which remains small compared with demand and the country’s reliance on imported fuel.
Approval is an administrative milestone, not completion of construction. Financing, revised specifications, procurement and delivery remain ahead.
