Case filed after mob forces Rajshahi Medical University resignations

Police arrested a man after a mob allegedly stormed Rajshahi Medical University and forced its vice-chancellor and an official to sign resignation letters. Doctors have protested against the incident.

From 8 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Police have arrested a man after a mob allegedly stormed Rajshahi Medical University and forced Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Jawadul Haque and a university official to sign resignation letters.

The case was filed by Nazmul Hossain, the vice-chancellor’s personal secretary and a section officer, against 50 to 60 unidentified people. Police arrested Abdus Salam, 56, in connection with the incident.

University officials said a group entered the vice-chancellor’s office while he was attending a virtual meeting, demanded that he sign a resignation letter and assaulted Nazmul when he intervened. The group allegedly took the signed letters and university devices.

Local BNP officials later identified Salam as a vice-president of the party’s Rajpara Thana unit, while police initially said they had not independently confirmed his political affiliation.

Doctors and medical professionals have protested against what they described as “mob culture” and demanded accountability.

The allegations are now part of a criminal investigation. Bengal Brief is not treating the claims against individual participants as established beyond what police, university officials and named political representatives have confirmed.
