Bangladesh and the Asian Development Bank have signed financing agreements worth $277.72 million for affordable housing and electricity infrastructure in the Chattogram Hill Tracts.
The package comprises two concessional loans totalling $275 million and a $2.72 million grant. Economic Relations Division Secretary Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky and ADB Bangladesh Country Director Qingfeng Zhang signed the agreements in Dhaka on 7 October.
One $100 million loan will support the Inclusive Affordable Housing Finance Project, intended to expand access to housing finance for low- and middle-income households. A second financing component will support electricity access and more resilient energy infrastructure in the Chattogram Hill Tracts.
The grant will supplement the power programme, including work intended to improve distribution services in a region where terrain and dispersed settlements make infrastructure more difficult and expensive to provide.
The agreements add to Bangladesh’s development-finance pipeline at a time when the government is also taking on more expensive borrowing for urgent energy needs. The concessional nature of the ADB package makes its debt-service burden comparatively lighter than hard-term commercial or short-term external financing.
