Britain imposed sanctions on 15 senior commanders connected with Sudan’s rival armed forces on Monday, citing suspected atrocities including conflict-related sexual violence.

The measures cover figures from the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces. They impose UK asset freezes and travel bans.

The Foreign Office linked the action to alleged abuses during the siege and fall of El Fasher and in other conflict-affected areas. It cited investigations describing the use of starvation and sexual violence against civilians.

The sanctions are government designations based on those allegations, rather than criminal convictions delivered by a court.

Alongside the restrictions, Britain announced £5 million to support survivors of conflict-related sexual violence and £10 million towards the wider humanitarian response.

The announcement comes a year after El Fasher fell to the RSF. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband called for accountability and an end to outside support for the warring parties as civilians continue to bear the consequences of the conflict.
