A temporary ceasefire in the occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky is due to begin on Thursday, 29 October, under an arrangement announced by the White House.
The agreement was announced on 23 October following contacts involving Melania Trump’s office and Russian and Ukrainian representatives. It aims to allow humanitarian supplies into the town and prepare safe passage for civilians who wish to leave.
Oleshky lies across the Dnipro River from Kherson. Its remaining residents include many older people facing shortages of essentials and difficulties obtaining medical care.
The White House says civilian teams will assess residents’ needs and help organise voluntary evacuation. Those are the intended arrangements, with implementation still ahead.
The ceasefire is limited to Oleshky and is temporary. It does not establish a general end to fighting elsewhere or settle the territorial and political disputes driving the war.
The immediate test will be whether the agreed pause allows aid and safe civilian movement once it begins.
