Serbia’s student-backed opposition won Sunday’s parliamentary election, prompting Aleksandar Vučić to concede defeat and supporters of the Students’ List to celebrate in Belgrade.
Vučić had resigned as president in September to contest the election and seek a return as prime minister. The result therefore defeats that bid rather than removing him from a presidency he still held.
The winning movement grew from nearly two years of demonstrations demanding accountability and opposing corruption. Although students shaped the campaign, its electoral candidates included professionals and other public figures rather than students themselves.
The protests followed the 2024 railway-station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated the list and offered support for reforms involving the rule of law, media freedom and democratic institutions.
The next task is forming a government and translating the protest movement’s demands into decisions about public services, institutions and Serbia’s international relationships.
