Extra £432 million backs government’s rough-sleeping drive

Andy Burnham set a Christmas ambition for every rough sleeper to receive an offer of help, supported by an additional £432 million. The funding is intended for accommodation and support through 2029. Delivering suitable help remains the test of the pledge.

The government committed an additional £432 million to its drive against rough sleeping, as Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he wanted every person sleeping on the streets to have an offer of help by Christmas.

The announcement was followed by a visit on Monday to the homelessness charity St Martin-in-the-Fields. Funding is intended to support accommodation and associated services through 2029.

The immediate promise concerns a route off the streets and an offer of support. It is not evidence that rough sleeping has already ended, or a guarantee that every individual will be in settled housing by the end of the year.

Support needs can extend beyond a bed for the night, and the programme links accommodation with help intended to keep people from returning to the streets.

The next measure of progress will be whether local services can turn the funding into suitable offers for the people they reach, and whether those offers result in lasting moves away from rough sleeping.
