Bangladesh seeks $6.47bn for transport and infrastructure projects

Officials are seeking development-partner financing for 13 proposed projects worth Tk1.06 trillion, including a six-lane Dhaka–Chattogram highway, MRT Line 2 and electric buses. The requested foreign-loan component totals about $6.47 billion. These are funding proposals, not loans already signed or disbursed.

From 9 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Bangladesh is seeking about $6.47 billion in foreign loans to support 13 proposed infrastructure projects, according to plans presented for development-partner consideration on 8 October.

The projects include expanding the Dhaka–Chattogram highway to six lanes, constructing MRT Line 2 in the capital and procuring 300 electric buses.

Their combined estimated cost is Tk106,439 crore, of which Tk79,583.47 crore has been proposed as foreign financing.

Officials at the Economic Relations Division intend to explore possible multilateral and bilateral lenders. A financing search is an early step; it does not mean the projects or borrowing terms have been finally approved.

The investment pipeline underscores the country’s substantial transport needs. It also raises questions about debt-service costs, project selection and whether implementing agencies can deliver large works on schedule.
