Standard Chartered is exploring the sale of its wealth and retail banking business in Bangladesh, confirming a strategic change at one of the country’s longest-established international lenders.
The bank announced the review on 8 October, saying it intends to concentrate on corporate and investment banking, particularly cross-border trade, capital flows and infrastructure finance. It has operated in Bangladesh for around 120 years.
The announcement is not a completed sale or an immediate closure of branches. Standard Chartered says retail customers and employees will continue to receive services as usual while it evaluates a possible transaction. Any transfer would require regulatory approvals and agreement with a buyer.
The decision follows weeks of discussion in Bangladesh’s banking industry about potential buyers for the portfolio. Several local banks have expressed preliminary interest, although negotiations, valuation and employment arrangements have not been finalised.
The proposed shift is significant for affluent customers and businesses that use the bank’s personal banking services. It also illustrates how international lenders are reallocating resources towards activities where their global networks provide an advantage.
For customers, the immediate message is continuity; the next milestones are a buyer, an agreed structure and regulatory consent.
