The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has completed hearings in a crimes-against-humanity case against four fugitives, including Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul Alam Hanif, and placed the matter awaiting verdict.
The case concerns the deaths of six people in Kushtia during the July uprising. Prosecutors allege that Hanif and the other accused were involved in directing or facilitating attacks that led to the killings.
Arguments and rebuttals concluded on 7 October, after which the tribunal marked the case as awaiting verdict, meaning a judgment can be delivered on a later date.
The accused are being tried as fugitives, with state-appointed lawyers representing them in the proceedings. The allegations remain allegations until the tribunal delivers its judgment.
The case is part of a wider set of accountability proceedings connected to violence during the uprising. Such trials carry major political and legal significance and require careful distinction between prosecution claims, established evidence and final judicial findings.
No verdict had been delivered by the 8 October edition cutoff. Bengal Brief therefore reports only that the trial stage has concluded and judgment is pending.
