Indian authorities were preparing coastal communities for Cyclone Arnab as forecasters warned that the storm would strengthen before reaching land.
An India Meteorological Department bulletin issued on Monday evening classified Arnab as a severe cyclonic storm and forecast further intensification during the following hours.
The projected landfall area was between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam, before noon on Wednesday, 28 October. Forecast winds near landfall were 115–125 kilometres per hour, with gusts reaching 140 kilometres per hour.
Those figures describe the forecast, not conditions already recorded onshore. The storm’s precise track and strength can change as new observations become available.
Authorities were preparing evacuation and emergency arrangements for vulnerable coastal areas. Plans to move residents should not be confused with confirmation that everyone identified as at risk has already left.
The expected combination of damaging wind and heavy rain puts coastal preparedness at the centre of the response as the storm approaches.
